Investment bonds have been around for decades, yet many Australians have never heard of them. With recent changes to tax rules, growing estate planning concerns, and increasing complexity around superannuation, these often-overlooked investment vehicles are starting to attract renewed attention.

In our recent CommonCents Financial Planning webinar, we explored what investment bonds are, how they work, and why they may deserve a place in your financial strategy.

What Is an Investment Bond?

An investment bond (sometimes called an insurance bond) is best thought of as a managed investment wrapped inside a life insurance structure. You contribute money, choose how it is invested, and the investment grows over time within the bond.

Unlike superannuation, investment bonds sit outside the super system, which means they are not subject to the same contribution caps and accessibility rules. They also allow you to nominate beneficiaries directly, creating some unique estate planning opportunities.

The Feature That Gets People’s Attention: The 10-Year Rule

One of the biggest attractions of an investment bond is the so-called “10-year rule”.

Provided certain contribution rules are followed, all withdrawals made after 10 years can generally be received tax-free by the investor. This means no additional income tax and no capital gains tax liability on the withdrawal.

For long-term investors, particularly those building wealth outside of superannuation, this can be a valuable feature.

Of course, investment bonds are designed to be long-term investments. If you withdraw funds within the first 10 years, different tax rules apply, so it’s important to seek personalised advice before committing money you may need in the short term.

How Are Investment Bonds Taxed?

Investment bonds are taxed internally by the provider, generally at a maximum rate of 30%. This means investors do not receive annual tax statements and usually have no investment bond income to declare in their personal tax returns.

For many people, that simplicity is appealing.

Instead of dealing with annual tax reporting and capital gains calculations, the administration is largely handled inside the structure itself.

Three Situations Where Investment Bonds Can Be Useful

1. Long-Term Investing Outside Super

Superannuation remains one of the most tax-effective investment vehicles available. However, there are times when people want to build wealth outside of super, whether because they have reached contribution limits, want access to funds before retirement, or simply want greater flexibility.

Investment bonds can provide a structured way to achieve this.

In the webinar, we discussed an example of a retiree with significant savings who could not contribute additional money to super. By investing through an investment bond, he gained professional investment management, simplified tax reporting, and the potential for tax-free withdrawals after 10 years.

2. Funding a Child or Grandchild’s Future

Many grandparents want to help fund a grandchild’s education or provide a financial head start.

Investment bonds can be particularly effective because ownership and beneficiary arrangements can be established from the outset, avoiding some of the complications that can arise when assets are held personally for long periods.

For example, a grandparent might invest regularly over a 10-year period and have the proceeds available when a grandchild reaches university age.

3. Estate Planning and Wealth Transfer

This is where investment bonds can be especially powerful.

Unlike many assets that pass through an estate, investment bonds allow specific beneficiaries to be nominated directly. In many situations, the proceeds can be paid according to the bond’s instructions without needing to pass through the deceased estate.

For blended families, complex family situations, or anyone wanting greater certainty around who receives their wealth, this can be a valuable estate planning tool.

Some structures even allow beneficiaries to receive proceeds as a tax-free income stream rather than a lump sum, potentially providing additional control and protection for vulnerable beneficiaries.

What About the 125% Rule?

Every investment bond investor should understand the 125% rule.

In simple terms, annual contributions generally cannot exceed 125% of the previous year’s contribution if you want to maintain the original 10-year tax period. Exceeding the limit can reset the qualifying period.

It sounds more complicated than it usually is in practice, but it’s one of the reasons why professional advice can be helpful when establishing and maintaining an investment bond strategy.

Are Investment Bonds Right for Everyone?

Well, no. They’re not a one size fits all strategy.

Like any financial strategy, investment bonds are simply another tool in the toolbox. They won’t replace superannuation for most Australians, and they won’t be appropriate in every situation.

However, they may be worth considering if you:

Want to invest outside superannuation for the long term.

Are looking for tax-effective wealth accumulation strategies.

Want to fund a child’s or grandchild’s future.

Have estate planning concerns.

Want greater control over who receives your assets and when.

Final Thoughts

Investment bonds aren’t new, but they are being rediscovered by Australians looking for additional flexibility beyond traditional superannuation and personal investments. With tax advantages for long-term investors, simplified administration, and powerful estate planning features, they can provide significant value when used in the right circumstances.

If you’d like to explore whether an investment bond could fit into your financial plan, professional advice is important because the benefits often depend on your tax position, investment timeframe, and estate planning objectives.

Inflation affects everyone, but not everyone feels its impact in the same way. Why Governments Love Inflation — and Why You Need a Plan to Deal With It is a topic worth considering if you want to protect yourself financially.

While households experience rising living costs, governments often benefit from inflation in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Understanding this dynamic helps explain why inflation is something individuals must actively plan for.

How Inflation Increases Tax Without Raising Rates

One of inflation’s biggest benefits for government is something known as bracket creep.

As wages rise gradually over time, tax thresholds often remain unchanged. This pushes more people into higher tax brackets, even when their real purchasing power hasn’t improved.

The result is higher tax revenue — without officially increasing tax rates.

Inflation and Government Debt

Inflation also reduces the real value of debt over time. A dollar borrowed today is worth far less decades into the future.

For governments carrying large debt loads, inflation quietly does much of the work in reducing that burden. From a policy perspective, a steady level of inflation is often seen as beneficial.

For households, however, the effect is very different.

What This Means for Your Financial Plan

For families and retirees, inflation steadily increases the income required to maintain a comfortable lifestyle — particularly during long retirements.

This is why portfolios that rely too heavily on fixed income assets such as Cash and Term Depsotis, can struggle over time. Assets that can grow in value and income — such as shares and property — are far better equipped to adapt to rising costs.

At the same time, balance matters. Too much growth exposure can create unnecessary stress. The goal is a portfolio that provides stability today while preserving purchasing power tomorrow.

Inflation quietly works in favour of governments, but against households.

Without a deliberate strategy, it steadily erodes income, savings and lifestyle. With the right balance of assets and long‑term planning, inflation becomes manageable rather than destructive.

Good financial planning isn’t about chasing wealth — it’s about giving you the confidence to enjoy your money, knowing it’s structured to last.

Almost everyone has wondered whether now is the right time to invest. It’s a natural question, especially when markets feel unpredictable or the news cycle is full of dramatic headlines.

But the belief that you can consistently pick the ideal time to buy or sell is one of the most damaging myths in personal finance.

Missing the Best Days Can Cost a Fortune

A study looking at the 20‑year period from 2004 to 2024 paints a clear picture.

An investor who stayed fully invested earned strong returns. But an investor who tried to time the market and accidentally missed just the 10 best days saw their overall return drop significantly.

Miss the 50 best days, and the return wasn’t just lower—it was negative and they got back less than the original investment!

This happens because markets often rebound sharply after downturns. If you’re sitting in cash “waiting for the right moment,” you typically miss those rebounds.

Why Getting Back In Is So Hard

Selling during a downturn is emotionally easy to understand. But buying back in is far harder because you need to make two decisions, the first is when to sell but the second is when to buy back in.

Many investors who exited during the GFC stayed in cash for years afterward—not because they wanted to, but because they became anchored to the lowest point and waited for the market to return there.

The problem is that it never did.

What Works Better Than Timing

1. A long‑term mindset.
Short‑term movement is random. Long‑term trends are consistent.

2. Dollar‑cost averaging.
Regular contributions smooth your entry price and reduce emotional decision‑making.

3. Diversification.
A mix of shares, property, bonds, and cash helps manage volatility.

4. Review, don’t react.
Your portfolio should change when your life changes—not when headlines do.

A Simple Illustration

Consider two investors who each start with $100,000 in 2004:

Investor A puts it into a global share portfolio.

Investor B puts it in a term deposit after being confronted with significant losses during the GFC.

After 20 years:

Investor A has over $640,000.

Investor B has around $164,000.

Investor B avoided volatility—but also missed out on decades of growth.

At CommonCents Financial Planning we believe in beginning life insurance discussions with adult children well before any crisis emerges.

Early action establishes responsible financial habits in your adult kids, reduces risks for them and for you and can help prevent significantly greater difficulties later.

Many parents hesitate having this talk for fear the topic feels too morbid yet once initiated these conversations typically bring relief and clarity to everyone involved.

Highlighting Practical Realities Gently

When we ask young adults what’s their primary option for safety in the event they get sick or injured and their response is a very quick and simple ‘I’ll move back in with mum and dad’!

You can utilise this insight to assist in reframing the discussion of insurance to be an enabling, authentic path to self-sufficiency rather than relying on the dependence of mum and dad.

A bit of help in paying premiums during the establishment phase provides essential breathing room whilst good practices develop simultaneously protecting retirement plans from becoming default safety nets.

Helpful yeah?

Try Using Relatable Examples

Of course, real situations resonate the most deeply and if you don’t have any stories from your own family and friend group then please reach out to us as we have seen dozens of situations where some good conversations around insurance could have gone a long way.

Consider the case where the daughter in law of one of our clients passed away unexpectedly which left the husband facing enormous pressure on where they were to live and how they were going to get by. The end result was the son and grandchildren moved in with the grandparents which emotively was an easy decision to live with but financially it became a very real source of tension.

We’ve assisted other clients who have covered extensive grandchildren costs so that there is no breakdown in relationship with the surviving spouse and access can be maintained with the grandkids.

Also, in situations where there is a prolonged illness helps to demonstrate how income protection payments preserves finances and relationships and prevents households from requiring grandparent accommodation during vulnerable periods.

Structuring for Growing Responsibility

When discussing insurance with your adult kids make sure that the cover is in their name or in their super and that the cover is not in your (the parent) name.

If they need help with premiums then you can either pay for the premiums directly or reimburse them with the same amount. My preference is that you pay the premiums directly yourself as that way you know the cover is in place and that the premiums are genuinely paid.

As financial independence and responsibility grows in your adult kids then transfer the premium responsibility to them.

Early proactive discussions of finance including life insurance help to cultivate lifelong responsible approaches to financial behaviours and decisions.

You can introduce topics naturally during gatherings or alongside milestones like a property purchase or family expansion.

At CommonCents Financial Planning we excel at facilitating comfortable productive conversations through clear and genuine illustrations of why doing it is so important and the potential risks of not doing it.

Contact us to chat about how you can take a step toward comprehensive financial security that spans generations.

There is little that drains your trust faster than a scammer pretending to be someone you trust. Learning how to avoid scammers taking your money is crucial in protecting yourself.

Impersonation is the #1 tactic that scammers use, costing Australians $353 million last financial year alone.

Here are three ways you can be more aware and stay one step ahead.

1. Banks and government agencies will never ask for details via text or email

You’ll never get a legitimate request from the ATO, Centrelink or your bank asking for passwords, one-time codes, or personal information through unsolicited messages.

The red flags to spot are things like slight misspellings in email addresses such as a clearly fake email like commbank-security@randomdomain.co instead of the real one or urgent demands to “verify your account now.”

It’s best to approach with extrem caution so if you’re in any kind of doubt, hang up and call the official number from your statement or their website.

2. Scammers ‘spoof’ phone numbers and create perfect-looking emails

Criminals can make caller ID show your local bank branch or even “MyGov.”

We’ve seen emails that look identical to Commonwealth Bank or NAB – the logo, the colours and even the formatting – until you hover over links or check the sender address.

We recommend you enable two-factor authentication everywhere and if the firm you’re dealing with does not have this feature available as a bare minimum you should consider finding another provider.

Also, never click links in unexpected messages. Instead, log in manually by typing the official URL yourself.

3. Always verify independently

The golden rule we live by: stop, think, and check separately.

If you receive a worrying call that warns you about your super or a tax refund then end the call politely, wait five minutes (so the line clears), then ring the organisation directly using a number you know is genuine.

If you’re still unsure you could try enlisting the help of a trusted friend or service and see what their thoughts are.

Impersonation scams rely on speed and fear.

Slow down, verify independently, and reach out to a trusted source if something just doesn’t feel right.

When it comes to your money and privacy, a healthy level of distrust and a quick call to a trusted source is better than a costly mistake.

Hello, families! At CommonCents Financial Planning, we believe money is fuel for your dreams, including creating a lasting legacy for your loved ones.

Gifting inheritance to adult children early—while you’re still around—can be a rewarding way to see your hard-earned savings make a difference now. But it’s not without risks.

Here are three considerations we guide families through to decide if early gifting aligns with their goals.

1. Weigh the Emotional Benefits
We often see families light up when gifting early allows them to witness the impact.

For instance, helping with a $150,000 house deposit can ease your child’s entry into the property market, especially amid rising costs. We help calculate how much you can gift without harming your retirement funds, ensuring you maintain your lifestyle.

This approach can help foster gratitude and stronger family bonds, turning money into shared memories rather than a distant estate payout.

2. Address Potential Risks of Misuse
We caution that without clear intentions, gifts can lead to unexpected outcomes.

One family we worked with gifted $20,000 to each child without conditions; one paid down a mortgage, while the other spent it on tattoos which caused a great deal of frustration.

It’s important to discuss expectations upfront—perhaps tying gifts to debt reduction or education.

This could prevent resentment and preserve your relationships, as unchecked gifting might erode the work ethic you’ve tried so hard to instill in your kids.

3. Factor in Centrelink and Financial Impacts
We always review how gifting affects Centrelink benefits.

You probably know that you can gift $10,000 annually without penalty (to a maximum of $30,000 over five years), but larger amounts like $100,000 count as assets for five years, which has the grating effect of keeping your age pension lower whilst you don’t even have the cash anymore!

We run scenarios to show the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision and be prepared for whatever the outcome is going to be.

Keep your overall Legacy goals front of mind

Early gifting can strengthen your legacy, but it requires thoughtful planning.

We suggest starting with a family discussion, assess the risks and also consult on the Centrelink outcomes.

At CommonCents Financial Planning, we’re here to model outcomes and ensure your generosity benefits everyone.

Contact us to explore how early gifting fits your family’s future!

Hey, parents! At CommonCents Financial Planning, we see money as fuel for dreams, and helping your adult children is a powerful goal when done thoughtfully.

Families often ask us about giving early inheritance, and we’ve developed strategies to make it meaningful.

Here are three ways we guide families to give wisely while securing their future.

1. Prioritise Your Financial Freedom
We ensure families safeguard their finances before giving.

With longer lifespans, kids often inherit in their 60s, when they’re financially stable.

We find supporting them in their 40s—like with a $50,000 home deposit—has more impact, but only if it doesn’t jeopardise your own retirement.

We help assess savings and expenses to confirm security.

2. Encourage Responsibility with Commitment
We advocate for hand-ups, not handouts, to build accountability.

We’ve seen gifted items, like a car, neglected without commitment—wrecked and uninsured.

Instead, we recommend matching contributions. For example, if your kids save $50,000 for a home, we guide you to match it with another $50,000. This “skin in the game” approach ensures they value the support.

3. Focus on Lasting Impact
We align giving with long-term outcomes. Inspired by Warren Buffett’s advice—give enough for opportunity, not idleness—we tie gifts to values like security.

Helping with education or a first home fosters independence.

We suggest clear terms, like loan repayments, to ensure gifts support your kids’ future, not just their present.

Helping your kids is a cherished goal, but balance is key at CommonCents Financial Planning

We start by reviewing your finances, then facilitate discussions with your kids about shared goals, often using matching strategies.

It’s how we plan for their success while securing your future.

Contact CommonCents Financial Planning to explore more ways to make your family’s finances work for everyone’s dreams!

At CommonCents Financial Planning, we believe money is the fuel for your dreams, not the destination itself.

To help you craft meaningful goals, we use a modern take on Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” framework, inspiring plans that go beyond finances.

Here are three ways we apply this approach to shape a fulfilling future for your family.

1. Financial Freedom for Peace of Mind
We know how draining it is to worry about bills. Financial freedom means covering essentials like rent and groceries while choosing how you live.

We guide families to set goals such as building a $5,000 emergency fund or clearing $10,000 in credit card debt.

These steps ease stress, opening doors for dreams like a family vacation.

2. Health Freedom for a Vibrant Life
We understand that health powers your lifestyle, both physically and mentally.

While marathons might not suit everyone, we encourage practical goals like daily walks, yoga sessions, or mindfulness practices.

For your family, it could be bike rides with kids or stress-relief activities. These tailored goals keep you energized for what matters most.

3. Time and Location Freedom for Joy
We value a controlled schedule and living where you love. We help set goals like reducing work hours for more family dinners or planning trips to visit interstate relatives.

Dreaming of a coastal move? We guide you to save strategically.

These freedoms prioritize loved ones and places that spark happiness

The Four Freedoms framework pushes us to think beyond dollars at CommonCents Financial Planning.

We invite you to pick one area—health, time, or location—and brainstorm a goal that excites your family.

It’s how we help families craft lives they cherish, and it can inspire yours too.

I recently hosted a webinar about turning dreams into reality, sharing how money fuels goals like family trips or a cozy retirement.

At CommonCents Financial Planning, we use the SMART framework—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound—to plan. Here are three ways we apply SMART goals to shape your family’s future.

1. Craft Ultra-Specific Goals
Vague ideas like “save more” don’t work for me. A client once envisioned a Maldives trip: seven nights in an underwater glass room at an upscale resort.

For your family, you might target a 2026 hybrid SUV or a $20,000 investment fund. Specific details help make planning clear and keep you committed.

2. Define Deadlines and Budgets
It’s important to always set “when” and “how much.”

That Maldives dream was planned for June 2026, budgeted to cost $12,782. This guided savings and the discipline involved.

Breaking down the bigger goal into smaller monthly savings amount can be extremenly helpful.

Timelines and budgets, part of SMART’s Measurable and Time-bound elements, prevent surprises.

3. Anchor Goals to My “Why”
My goals need heart. That Maldives trip was inspired by a childhood story from my client’s aunt which made it deeply personal.

Why do you want a goal? Maybe it’s giving your kids opportunities or more family time. Linking goals to values like legacy or joy—the “Relevant” in SMART—will keep you motivated through obstacles.

SMART goals give your dreams structure and purpose.

I challenge you to write one goal today: detail it specifically, set a deadline, and tie it to your “why.”

It’s how we plan for our clients at CommonCents Financial Planning, and it can transform your future.

At CommonCents Financial Planning, we view money as fuel for your dreams, not the dream itself.

I recently hosted a webinar exploring how to create goals that make life vibrant and I shared a framework to help craft goals that stick, drawing from my own personal journey.

Here are three steps we use to help families plan a future they love.

1. Visualise Goals with Vivid Clarity
I once dreamed of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, picturing salty air, seagulls, and a cool wind.

For any goal—like a family vacation or a new home—I use my five senses to make it real. I imagine the beach’s warmth or research destinations online. This clarity, sharpened by tools like virtual tours, keeps me focused and energised.

2. Align Goals with My Core Values
My goals must reflect what I hold dear, like family or security. I’ve learned chasing $1 million without purpose is just an empty pursuit.

I like to list my top values— such as connection, growth, or stability—and tie my goals to them.

Things like saving for my kids’ education aligns with my value of opportunity, driving me through challenges.

3. Believe in My Success
The story of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile inspires me—belief made it possible. Before his run, many thought it impossible, but his success sparked others.

If I doubt a goal—like becoming an astronaut at 51—it’s doomed. I choose realistic dreams, like debt freedom or a family trip, trusting I can achieve them.

Setting goals turns wishes into plans

I urge you to try my method: pick one goal, visualise it vividly, align it with your values, and believe in it.

It’s how I shape my family’s future at CommonCents Financial Planning, and it can work for you.
